Mark is an internationally acclaimed footwear designer and artist who is responsible for some of the most exciting and beautiful shoe inspired artwork in the world!
Born in New York, Mark has travelled the globe gaining inspiration from artists such as Andy Warhol, who Mark was lucky enough to study at work. Mark was doubly fortunate in his mentors as he also completed an apprenticeship under renown shoe designer Roger Vivier, who personally encouraged Mark in his capricious approach to footwear design.
Mark's career as a shoe designer then began in earnest, and he quickly found himself creating footwear for many top designers including Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and Charles Jourdan as well as top US retailers Barney's, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus.
In fact Mark was so successful that he opened his own shoe shop in New York in 1998. In order to cover the blank walls of his new shop he created a number of sketches based on shoes. Mark must have been one of the very few people surprised when these sketches were quickly snapped up by his clients, sometimes even outstripping the sales of his footwear! From these early days Mark's artwork has developed a cult following and is now exhibited worldwide: his loyal following of art collectors even includes Oprah Winfrey!
Mark's work utilises a wide range of techniques including stencils, free hand drawing and mixed media. But what is consistent are the results: a fabulous range of playful, yet romantic and truly individual images that draw upon his undoubted skills as a highly successful shoe designer.
The French philosopher Georges Bataille once challenged any art collector to love a Picasso as a shoe fetishist loves a shoe. If Georges was alive today he may well agree that Mark Schwartz's artwork means that both footwear fanatics and art lovers no longer have to make that particular choice.
