Choosing suitable evening shoes can sometimes be tricky, but although there are no hard and fast rules there are some useful guidelines to bear in mind.

There are two main differences between day and evening shoes - the material and style. Daytime shoes tend to be more functional - and even with high stilettos
the looks tend towards block colours, relatively unadorned styles and high fashion styling.  Materials used for day shoes are also usually more practical - leather, suede, patent - allowing a greater degree of comfort and durability
compared to evening specific shoes.

For smart evening shoes, think about the full outfit and the look you are aiming for. When shoe shopping, try to bring your dress or evening outfit with you. If your legs are your best feature, show off slim calves and ankles with a skyscraper stiletto
. If your legs are a little on the heavy side however, a chunky, wedge or mid heel will be slim your legs right down - and be more comfortable to boot!

Consider also whether you will need to stand or walk for extended periods in the shoe. `Car-bar` shoes can be as decadent and towering as you like, but if you have to walk any distance in them you may risk an accident! Highly unglamorous! Why not also keep a pair of little flats tucked away just in case? There is nothing less glamorous than a woman rubbing her feet and slouching due to painful shoes!

You`ll also want to think about your accessories. If your dress is plain, you can be a bit more daring with your shoes and bag`s colour and style. If the evening will be a fancy, glamorous affair consider adding a bit of bling with diamante trim, ribbons, jewel-like colours and rich fabrics.

But if your dress is the main feature, don`t confuse the look with attention grabbing shoes and accessories - in this case less is
probably more.

Finally, it`s worth splashing out a little more on a good pair of shoes and a clutch bag - jewellery can be costume and fun (think
chunky cocktail rings) but shoes and bags should ooze quality and sophistication, even if they are classic staples that you reuse
regularly.
